EXERCISE | Finding time to work out in the midst of every day life

One of the things I'm most asked about in my everyday life and via email/comments from blog readers is how do I find time to exercise in the midst of everything we call life. The answer: it's not always easy, but it's something that I not only enjoy doing, it's something that's good for my body. For me, it's not a question of if I'm going to exercise, it's a question of when. Exercise is just as important for my body asfood and trust me, you won't ever find me skipping a meal!

For the most part, I'm a pretty determined/dedicated person, so if I want to get a workout in even if my day is packed, I'm usually too stubborn not too. Now, occasionally, there are days (specifically, rainy days that call for a good book) when I've planned to run that I don't and I'm slowly learning that it's ok.

What works for me may not work for you, but I always enjoy reading about how others do things to see where I can apply some of their tips to my own life. Here are a few tips that are useful to help you incorporate exercise into your (already) busy life.

1. Make Weekly Goals
Each week, I like to run between 15-20 miles. I usually run 4-5 miles at a time, which means I run 4-5 days each week. I almost always have two rest days per week where I don't plan any exercise.

2. Check Your Calendar
We're all busy and have our time committed in so many areas, but often, there are little pockets here and there where exercise makes sense. I like to look at my calendar (I use an Erin Condren Life Planner) to see what days most work for rest days and go from there. This time of year, my rest days often revolve around when the boys have sports.

3. Plan for Exercise
Once you know what your calendar looks like, you know when you can exercise. I work out all different times of the day depending on what I have going on.

My favorite time of day to workout and run is in the morning, but that doesn't always happen. Mornings are tough, especially when you have kids to get to school and work to go to, but in a perfect world, I'd work out every morning. Some days, I'll jump on the treadmill for 2-3 quick miles (I have it down to a science) after the boys are off to school, while on other days, I take a "runch" which is my version of lunch.

I'm very fortunate that I have access to a gym at work. Some days, like yesterday, I'll jump on a treadmill and get in a few weights before taking a quick shower and eating lunch at my desk. Working out at lunch is not always ideal, but sometimes, it's really the only time I have that I can workout. This week, for instance, I've run five miles at lunch twice simply because we've had a lot going on at night. Yesterday, I watched Fixer Upper on Netflix while I ran and it really made me feel like I had a break even though I was exercising.

Sometimes, on the weekend or if the boys aren't home, I'll run at night. I much prefer running outdoors, but again, if it's really early or at lunch, I'm usually on the treadmill because I don't like being out alone in the dark.

CURRENTLY | May 2016

Each month, I read so many awesome "Currently" posts and this month, I decided to join in on the fun.

celebrating | the fact that there are only three working days between my summer work schedule and me. I love the fact that I have extended weekends for three months even if it means working a little longer four days each week. I'm also looking forward to seeing my mom, grandmothers, and MIL for Mother's Day and celebrating them!

reading | Skyward by Mary Alice Monroe. I love her books and this one is no exception.

pondering | Brace yourself for this heavy thought - I'm thinking about what I'm going to do for dinner.

sipping | A giant YETI Rambler full of water. I'm so thirsty!

going | Nowhere tonight, I hope. We have something pretty much every day/night the rest of the week/weekend, so I'm looking forward to a night at home. I just want to play with the boys and then relax with my husband when the boys go to bed.

I feel like I blinked and it was May! I also feel like I'm on repeat because I keep saying that same thing each month, but really, this year is flying! I'm ok  with the month of May flying because I'm really looking forward to June when we have two vacations scheduled. June, though, can take it's time!

In April, I didn't make any official goals on my blog, but I had a few things I wanted to accomplish and did. Most of these centered around organization. Here they are:

  • Organized the craft cabinets - If you're anything like me, you have tons of art and craft supplies around your house. I have a cabinet in my laundry room and one in the kitchen devoted to these sorts of things. I'm happy to have this crossed off my list.
  • Went through the boys' old school papers and organized them - I like to save some of the boys' school work, but what that usually turns into is a pile of papers for each one on the desk in our office upstairs. I went through them and got rid of what I didn't need to keep and put the rest in boxes.
  • Finished photo books for Kaden's fifth year and K.C.'s seventh. 
  • Cleaned out and organized my party closet - I have a closet that has become the "party closet" because it houses party supplies, tons of ribbon and tulle, and lots of different treat bags. I bought a few rubs at Target and organized everything. It's so much easier to get to it all, too!
  • Cleaned out my drawers and donated clothes - Kevin does a good job with cleaning out, but I'm bad about saving a shirt I've had for ten years because I  might wear it one day. I successful gave my nieces two huge bags of clothes and took some others to Goodwill.
I'm hoping May will be good to me in the goals department as I have a few lofty goals. 

1. Paint the boys' bedroom and upstairs bathroom (and maybe the office). I have been talking about this for years, but I haven't done it. Right now, there are several paint samples stuck on the wall and I think (fingers crossed) I've narrowed it down to a color or two for their bedroom. Their room is Clemson-themed, and as much as sweet Kaden wants to paint at least one wall purple, I don't think I can do it. I want to go with a pale gray. My long-range plan is to have the common areas in our home painted that same color or a shade lighter.

2. Read four books. There are four books I'm planning to read this month. Mary Alice Monroe is one of my favorite writers. I just started Skyward and her newest novel, A Lowcountry Wedding is on it's way to my house. I also downloaded I Will Carry You by Angie Smith and plan to read it. I've read Mended and did her Seamless Bible study. I really enjoy her writing. I'm hoping this book will continue to strengthen me as I navigate the murky water that is miscarriage and fertility issues. I've been tempted to pick up Me Before You so many times, but haven't. After seeing the preview for the movie while I was running on the treadmill yesterday, I added it to my reading list because you know books are always better than movies. 

3. Finish our Disney photo book. I started on this photo book not too long after our trip, but haven't finished it.

4. Try one new recipe each week. I really enjoy cooking, but lately, our nights have been filled with lots of fun which leads to lots of eating out. Trust me, I don't hate it because trying to decide what to cook is one of my least favorite tasks, but I feel so much better when I cook for my family.

5. Slow down. Summer is coming and I want to relax and soak it in. It's no secret that I find it hard to relax and am really great with filling up every spare minute, but I'm determined not to do that in May. I want to fill my days with things I enjoy, not things I'm doing because I have to or have committed to too much.

6. Continue journaling what I'm reading in the Bible. I'm reading through Romans now and am enjoying writing down my thoughts and questions. I'm also putting to use some of the commentaries I have from my granddad's study.

7. Write more. I write a lot, but oftentimes, it's things I have to write. I'd like to get my creative juices going and write for fun. My goal is to blog three times a week and also write for pleasure.
